2026 will mark the 50th anniversary of the passing of Xalbador (Fernando Aire Etxart, 1920–1976), who was a beloved Basque bertsolari and shepherd from Urepel in the Aldudes Valley, Baxe Nafarroa (North Basque Country). Known for his profound, heartfelt improvised verses on rural life, nature, and faith, he is considered one of the most iconic figures in modern Basque literature and improvised poetry.

Our next SF BCC Hike will take place on Saturday, October 24. Please mark your calendars!
The location is still TBD, but I’m trying a new trail on the Peninsula that might be a great option for our next hike.

BCC Mus Madness
BCC Mus Madness
Get your card faces ready, it’s time for another BCC Mus Madness! Join us on Sunday, June 28th, for a full day dedicated to the Basque Country’s favorite card game.
Whether you are a seasoned Muslari or have never held a card deck in your life, this event is all about community, culture, and a little friendly competition. We’ll start the morning right at 8:30 AM with coffee, muffins, and fresh fruit to fuel your strategy.
Adult Tournament
Prizes: Awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place
Note: This is a fun-focused tournament and is not an N.A.B.O. Mus Finals qualifier. And remember, NABO changed the minimum age to 16 so this is a great opportunity to prep your children or grandchildren for upcoming NABO tournaments!
Not sure how to play? No problem. We are offering free Mus lessons for everyone in the afternoon. If you’ve been wanting to learn the difference between Hordago and Paso, this is your chance!
Please note that Valerie Arretchea will be continuing Mus lessons on Sunday afternoons starting in the fall. If you are interested, I will be happy to pass your information on to her.

We’re excited to explore a fun group outing to a Valkyries home game at Chase Center in San Francisco, and we’d love to see strong interest from our BCC community!

This invitation is open to BCC youth and parents. We need a minimum of 10 attendees to make this happen, and space is limited to a maximum of 20 attendees.
Ticket Information: Group Sale Ticket price: $40 per person
How it will work:
Once we confirm interest, Alain will coordinate the ticket purchase.
Attendees will pay upfront for their tickets.

After the game, the BCC Board will reimburse the cost of the tickets.

We’re bringing in elite players straight from the Basque Country for a showcase of skill you have to see in person! Once the games wrap up, we’re heading to a massive, all-inclusive Basque dinner for $65.
Basque Film Series: Karmele

KARMELE is a story of sustainability, resilience, and dignity in the face of oppression—a journey woven through culture, music, and art.
The film’s director, Asier Altuna, will present his film at the Basque Cultural Center and will do a Q&A after the screening.

Cider House Dinner Fundraiser
The San Francisco Basque Folkloric Groups in partnership with the Basque Club & Basque Cultural Center will be hosting a special Cider House Dinner fundraiser for the Zazpiak Bat Dancers for their upcoming trip to the Basque Country this summer where they will continue their collaboration with the local Basque dance group of Garaztarrak, who came to San Francisco last summer (2025).
