Basque Film Series - Bizkarsoro

Synopsis: Five true stories based on oral testimonials and texts by writers take place between 1914 and 1982. Through them, we see the social changes experienced throughout the 20th century by a small town in the Northern Basque Country, the deep-rootedness and approximation of a language, and the struggle for survival.

  • 1914 A woman lives in the hope of receiving a letter.

  • 1921: At school, children learn about the existence of a stick called “Anti.”

  • 1940: During the German occupation, some Basques from the southern Basque Country disappear, fleeing Franco’s dictatorship.

  • 1966: Four young people discover words buried in the mountains.

  • 1982: A group of parents decide to set up a Basque school for their children.

2023, directed by Josu Martinez, 82 minutes, in Euskara, French, German with English subtitles.

About the Director Josu Martinez

Josu Martinez (Bilbao, Bizkaia. 1986) has written and directed the feature-length documentaries Itsasoaren alaba (2009), Sagarren denbora (2010), Prohibido recordar (2010), Gure sor lekuaren bila (2015) and Dios no me perdona (2018), all shown at San Sebastian, as well as having co-directed Barrura begiratzeko leihoak (2012) and Paperezko hegoak (2021), screened in Zinemira. He has also put his name to the short films Ama (2018), included in the Kimuak catalogue, and Anti (2019). This year his film Mirande, film bat egiteko zirriborroa is also showing in Zinemira.
